C. External valve mantle in SEM. The external marginal strutted process openings and spines are visible. The marginal strutted process external openings appear as simple pores. A series of siliceous bumps called spinules or granules occur on the mantle area and also surround the marginal strutted process external opening. Scale bar equals one micron.
